Job Description

Safety Officers play a vital role in workplace safety management by providing guidance, monitoring compliance, and engaging staff in programs that promote safe practices.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspections and audits.
  • Develop and implement risk assessments.
  • Investigate incidents and update trend analysis.
  • Liaise with the OHS Manager on safety matters.
  • Perform administrative tasks and ad-hoc duties as required.
  • Manage waste disposal and hazardous materials.
  • Support the development and enforcement of OHS policies and programs.
  • Provide training and advice on safety topics (e.g., noise, machinery use).
  • Conduct risk assessments and enforce preventative measures.
  • Review and update policies in line with legislation.
  • Organize OHS training for staff and executives.
  • Inspect premises and personnel for compliance (e.g., PPE usage).
  • Oversee installations, maintenance, and disposal processes.
  • Report unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Record and investigate incidents, including worker’s compensation claims.
  • Prepare reports and statistical data for management.
  • Promote safety initiatives and standardize practices.
  • Maintain compliance registers, documentation, and meeting records.
  • Regularly inspect equipment and ensure safety standards are upheld.

Desired Experience & Qualifications

  • Education: Matric (essential); Safety Management Training Course (SAMTRAC); Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA – essential); Incident Investigation; First Aid Level 2 (Level 3 advantageous).
  • Experience: Minimum 2+ years as a Safety Officer (essential).
  • Certifications: Health and Safety Auditors Course (advantageous).
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of the OHS Act and regulations.
    • Understanding of hazardous materials and practices.
    • Experience in writing safety reports and policies.
    • Computer literacy (MS Office).
    • Excellent communication and team engagement skills.
