Job Description
Reporting to the Compliance Manager, the SHE Officer serves as the on-shift representative for Safety, Health, Environmental, and Energy (SHE) policies and standards. This role ensures compliance with regulations, supports operational teams, and promotes a strong safety culture across all shifts.
Key Responsibilities
Compliance & Monitoring
- Ensure adherence to regulatory, ISO, and legal SHE requirements across all sites.
- Monitor implementation of SHE policies, procedures, and systems during shifts.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and checks in line with OHS Act requirements.
- Support compliance KPIs and ensure timely submission of reports, samples, and regulatory documentation.
Operational Support
- Provide SHE guidance to manufacturing operations.
- Investigate workplace incidents and implement preventative measures.
- Conduct Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) and update SWPs/SOPs.
- Facilitate inductions, toolbox talks, training, and safety awareness initiatives.
- Perform safety inspections of equipment, PPE, and facilities.
- Monitor contractor compliance and issue work permits when required.
Environmental & Energy Management
- Maintain Environmental Management Systems in line with legislation and ISO standards.
- Conduct environmental audits, assessments, and investigations.
- Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support energy efficiency programs, including shutdown schedules, efficient lighting, sensors, and air leak reduction.
Risk & Reporting
- Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification across departments.
- Review contractor risk assessments before work begins.
- Identify and mitigate significant operational risks.
- Participate in daily production and SHE meetings.
- Maintain SHE documentation, registers, and compliance records.
- Promote company values, safety culture, and operational standards.
- Support initiatives related to safety, quality, and customer focus.
- Participate in overtime and rotational weekend standby duties when required.
Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- National Diploma in Safety Management (preferred) or equivalent qualification.
- SAMTRAC certification.
- Knowledge of OHS Act, ISO standards, environmental, noise, and energy requirements.
- Tertiary qualification in Safety or Environmental Management (advantageous).
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in manufacturing or related environment.
- Experience in battery manufacturing (advantageous).
- Understanding of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 systems.
- Familiarity with national regulations and by-laws.
- Computer literacy (MS Office).
